Please consider this your formal notification of the upcoming proficiency testing for all 10th grade students as well as any 11th grade or 12th grade students still needing to pass one or more areas of the Ohio Graduation Test scheduled to be given this March. Passage on the OGT is required for graduation and for students to receive a diploma in the State of Ohio. With the implementation of the OGT test there are important facts that you should be aware of. Please consider the following:
• Students first take the OGT in March of their 10th grade year
• There are only five test attempts available for students to pass the subject areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Citizenship, and Science. The OGT tests will be given during the months of October and March only. There may be a special summer testing available for students. See details below on additional test attempts.
• Two additional test attempts may be available on the OGT in the summer if students register and attend 10 hours of summer remediation for each subject area they wish to be tested in. The summer classes will be scheduled once test results from March are made available the third week of May. Student test results will be mailed as soon as they are received. Please note that the summer classes for the OGT will begin on Monday, June 14 and run through Friday, June 18 with the tests being given the week of June 21st. Students are required by law to attend the summer class sessions in order to take the tests the week of June 21st.
• Passage on the OGT is required for graduation and to receive a diploma
In response to the testing demands placed on our students, Port Clinton City Schools have implemented significant curriculum changes over the past few years to better prepare our students for passage of the Ohio Graduation Test. In addition, Port Clinton HS teachers have prepared a four-day review for all 10th graders as well as any 11th or 12th grader who still need to pass one or more of the OGT tests. The review will be held Tuesday, March 9th thru Friday, March 12th. The 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who are scheduled for testing will arrive to school at their normal time and report to their assigned test review group. All review groups will be under the direction of PCHS staff. During this review time students will cover a different area of the OGT test each day. The remainder of our student body, grades 9, 11, and 12 who are not involved in the OGT testing, will report to school one hour late for their first period class. Again, this will be done Tuesday thru Friday beginning on March 9th. The review sessions are not optional; every 10th, 11th, and 12th grader who still need to pass a section or sections of the OGT must attend and report on time to their review group. Students who show up late or fail to attend without a note from parents excusing their absence will be assigned a Friday Session after school to make up the time. A time schedule for the review week is contained in this mailing.
During the week of OGT testing, March 15th thru March 19th, the high school will be on a revised class schedule to insure that our 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students taking the OGT will not miss their classes. Students assigned to testing the week of March 15th should arrive at their normal time and report to their assigned testing room. Students who are not involved in OGT testing during the week of March 15th should report to school on a two-hour delay schedule for their first class. Again, this is being done to minimize the amount of class time all of our students miss due to testing. We believe testing our 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in small groups simulating a normal classroom environment along with minimal distractions provide them with the best possible chance to succeed on the Ohio Graduation Test. The class schedule for Monday, March 15th thru Friday, March 19th is contained in this mailing.
To summarize, the only students who do not have to attend the OGT review sessions scheduled for March 9th thru March 12th are all 9th graders and any 11th or 12th grader who have already passed the OGT test. Be advised, the only students who do not have to attend testing the week of March 15th thru March 19th, are all 9th graders and any 11th or 12th grader who has already passed the OGT test.
Please carefully review this letter, the review/testing schedules, and revised class schedules for both the week of March 9th and March 15th. If, after a close review of all the information, you still have questions please call the high school at (419) 734-2147 and ask for the guidance office.
Sincerely,
Mr. Ralph Moore
PCHS Principal
